The neonatal heel prick is a blood collection procedure done on newborns. It consists of making a pinprick puncture in one heel of the newborn to collect their blood. This technique is used frequently to collect capillary blood specimen for serum bilirubin and to monitor blood glucose level.

This course aims to provide Enrolled Nurses with the relevant knowledge and skills to perform heel prick on neonates safely and correctly. It also covers role of Enrolled Nurses in performing neonatal heel prick, infection control measures, complications, documentation and caregiver education.
