Presentation Synopsis

HM 9 - Connecting the dots – Abuse and Harassment in the Healthcare Ecosystem

Abuse and Harassment as Workplace Hazards to your Health and Wellbeing
We are familiar with traditional workplace dangers, such as trip hazards, sharps, and bad working postures. These tend to be obvious, tangible and well-accepted. What is less obvious are harm stemming from the people we interact with at work, in the form of harassment and even abuse. These vary from subtle sarcasm, intentional ostracism, to blatant incivility. The harm associated with such hazards are just as nuanced, as mental stress and fatigue may not be obvious and can linger on unknowingly. Staff might further be burdened with the responsibility of healing their own injuries which are incurred at work. While greater awareness has been made towards this area, more can be done to recognize the harm it causes and address the sources of these hazards.
