Prof Skinner is a Health Psychologist, having worked in the UK, Australia and now Denmark. His work focuses on the provision of person-centred care, and how to equip people with diabetes with the informational, emotional and behavioural resources needed to enable them to self-manage their diabetes. He has worked on the development of several self-management education/support programs for adults newly diagnoses with type 2 diabetes (DESMOND), adolescents with type 1 diabetes (FACTS) and individual at high risk of developing diabetes (MAGDA). To inform the development of these programs Prof Skinner has focuses much of his research on the interaction between health care professionals and people with diabetes, in structured group programs and in traditional 1-1 consultations, as well as looking at how the Diabetes Health Care Team communicate and collaborate to support the person with diabetes. He co-runs the diabetes health promotion social media platform emojifit diabetes, which now has over 500,000 follower. He has published over 180 peer reviewed papers and is widely recognised as internationally leader in the field of psychosocial aspects of diabetes.
