Chua Lee Kheng

Assistant Director, Nursing, National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS)

My Nursing Journey:

I am an Assistant Director, Nursing in the Nursing Development Unit, and I graduated from NYP in 1997 with a Diploma in Nursing. As a nurse leader in the training department, I oversee the structure and delivery of quality education for nurses in NHCS. I was given the support to complete my studies, namely Specialist Diploma in Counselling, Masters in Health Science (Education) and Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management and Leadership.

I was at a loss as to which career track to begin with after graduation. I wanted to be a counsellor, a teacher or a nurse. In fact, I wanted to be all three if possible. A medical journey with my best friend who was diagnosed with leukemia, provided me with the opportunities to interact with nurses; and it got me thinking that it is indeed possible to have all three careers rolled into one.

It’s a joy to share my experiences and knowledge with others, especially overseas delegates. With each opportunity and encounter, I learnt about their culture and its influence on patient-nurse interaction and nursing practices from a social perspective.
